Locating Your Plots
for Best Usage by Deer
By Bob Coine
Where to locate your food plots can be a complex topic,
because the optimum locations depend on your goals for the
plots, especially whether they are intended as nutrition plots or
hunting plots. For our purposes here, I will offer some simple explanations and ideas for locating your plots. For thoroughly detailed
illustrations of actual hunting plots, please obtain a copy of the
DVD Building Whitetail Paradise, Volumes 2, 4a and 4b.
There are two basic reasons for choosing a particular plot location.
The first is to offer an undisturbed area for your deer to feed with a
great feeling of security. This plot should be seldom visited by
humans, and will help “hold” deer on your property. It will offer
great nutrition and help build a healthier deer herd.
The second main purpose of a food plot is to attract deer for the
specific goal of harvest. Although they do, of course, offer nutrition,
hunting plots—when hunted properly—are awesome tools for the
hunter-manager. You may observe and select individual animals for
your harvest, which is a super idea if you intend to manage for a
quality deer herd. Volume 4a of the Building Whitetail Paradise
DVD series will show you how deer relate to a hunting plot, during
the hunting season!
For optimum usage, locate either style of plot where deer will
want to be. The best choice for a hunting plot may be within heavy
security cover, near thickets, woods, or heavy native grasses where
deer bed down. Another option for both food plots or hunting plots
may be in open country, adjacent to travel routes. You can also
the winter.
